Union assault.
Five organizers of the Transport Workers Union were brutally assaulted in Philadelphia on February 8 2006 during a drive targeting Fleet Service workers at the premerger US Airways.
These Fleet Service workers are working under a contract forced on them in bankruptcy court.
US Airways is no longer in bankruptcy, and it is no longer any reason to stay with a contract that do not acknowledge the efforts and hard work of the Fleet Service employees.
TWU Local 580 is currently negotiating a new contract with the merged US Airways as their contract expired last summer.
In this negotiations it is plenty of room for improvements based on the prosperous future of the worlds largest low fare airline.
It is with great sadness that I and my fellow fleet service employees witness the total disregard IAM in this case show for their members and and the fleet Service employees of the premerger America West Airlines.
For reasons beyond what I can imagine, IAM is fighting to keep a contract that jeopardize jobs security, reduce benefits and restrain working conditions.
I believe that if IAM had the best for ALL the fleet service employees in US Airways on their mind, they (IAM) would long time ago joined TWU 580 in the attempt to dissolve the contract forced on them in bankruptcy court. That way we ALL could show the company a united front demonstrating our commitment to the future of the new airline and receive fair compensation for our contribution.
The only way for IAM in today’s environment is to actively join TWU 580 and support the negotiations for a new fleet service contract.
By doing so, IAM also demonstrate their commitment to their members.
I am making a note of that so far the incident is not mentioned at all at www.iam141.org/usairway.htm , the website for IAM Fleet Service at US Airways
