One of the many rasons I like tribe is the wide celebration of life and culture. So it was no surprise to learn of Rosa Park's death first here at tribe.
What any one person can do to make things better is only a little. Rosa Park's life demostrates one life can make a big difference
As I understand it there were many people who were willing to confront the Bus Company. But the NAACP discouraged some because they didn't want them to be embarassed or to set back the cause. Parks was beyond reproach.
There's a role for all of us to play, but sometimes not completely our own choosing.
I'm very glad to honor this American hero Rosa Parks. And I'm thankful of all the others--some of you--whose stories I don't know.

I am here in Belgrade (Serbia & Montenegro) at the moment where little English or Western news is shown on tv, so I tend not to watch tv when Im in this region. I also learnt about Rosa Park's death here on Tribe.
Rosa Parks took one huge step for mankind and it helped change the mindsets of people both black & white in America. It made black people realise America belongs to them too, and white folk realised that they CAN sit next to a black person. Im sure mama Rosa gave some pretty good conversation too cause everyone else in the bus was to shocked to say anything haha...
She may not walk the earth with us anymore, but I hope Mama Rosa's strong spirit will continue to live and encourage people to seek freedom not only for themselves, but everyone else too.

Thousands of African-Americans have lined up outside the US Capitol to pay homage to the body of civil rights activist Rosa Parks, saying her work had more effect on their lives than any other person. President George W. Bush and other top US leaders have also honoured Parks. She died last week aged 92. Parks rocketed to national prominence when, in racially segregated Montgomery in 1955, she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger, violating local laws.

Re: Rosa Parks RIP
Tue, November 1, 2005 - 12:17 AMI seem to recall that MLK was not given that honor after he was assassinated. The US, at least on the surface, in its "civil society", has come a long way since 1968. I just wish we'd honor the thoughts behind these great Americans more, rather than just dress them up like some sort of talisman and parade before them as if somehow showing due honor produces peace and justice in the world through magically being in a photo-op at their grave.
I'm sorry, but I find the hypocracy in Washington DC almost galling at the moment. May all those who work towards making this world a better place, rather than a bitter place, be honored in their sacrifices. And may the world come to some peaceful consensus on what that is, rather than being brow-beaten into submission. -

Fri, November 18, 2005 - 10:38 AMYou're right Bob, and the opposite side of the coin is also true: there's a joy and stregnth in remembering the stories of those who struggled and struggle.
I always thought it was strange as a kid to read the obituary pages in the paper, but I love to read them now. Ordinary people often lead quite extrodinary lives.
We all sort of have to create as we go along, so sometimes it's hard to see until the end the patterns that connect.
LOL well hope you don't die for long, long time. Bob thanks for all you do to create a better now.
