Dusting Off the Manual

Digby is one of the best political writers of the blogoshpere in my estimation. His piece today seems very important and I fear that he' right that the political strategy in the wake of Katrina will be to exploit the racial divide in America.

"For those who think that we are in a post racist world because George W. Bush appointed blacks to his cabinet, think again. The modern Republican Party was built on the back of an enduring national divide on the issue of race. George Bush may not personally be racist (or more likely not know he's racist) but the party he leads has depended on it for many years. The coded language that signals tribal ID has obscured it, but don't kid yourselves. It is a party that became dominant by exploiting the deep cultural fault of the mason dixon line."

When I was in Australia in 1999 I ran across two couples from Texas. They claimed to be neighbors of the Bushes and made the following statement--"GW? He's our kind of people!" Guess what they meant?

"GW? He's our kind of people!"

I've wanted to respond to this ever since you posted it. I tend to bloviate; it's hard to contain myself.

The Bush family and GW in particular aren't my kind of people. But I know, and am even fond, of many people who think they are that kind of people.

Digby grew up in the South like me, and I think he's about my age. When he wrote "Dusting off the manual" I got a sinking feeling in my stomach. I think he got it right about the "Southern Strategy" and how the Republicans are playing the current slump in the polls. His saying so took me back to how it felt when I was a kid; sickening.

      A post today digbysblog.blogspot.com/2005_0...9148161
brings up the "F" word so nakedly that I was startled. Fascism is a word that's lost it punch. Still as Digby points out the America's conduct warrants examination.

All this from two links he stumbled across at Andrew Sullivan's blog. WTF?
