Once in a while I'll run into a black American who just goes on about how much there's racism in the USA.
Many black people I've run into in this country like to holler. This isn't proper ettiquette to get a job.
True, there is some racism out here. But it's decreasing.

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Wed, August 10, 2005 - 12:19 PMAccording to whom? The current Administration is committed to "ignoring" the problem...
I suppose it also depends on whether or not one considers economic disenfranchisement and judicial disenfranchisement to be "fairly" distributed. -

Thu, August 11, 2005 - 3:20 AMSeeing the blind leading the blind. Fools go around spreading weird anti-racism.
For every anti-racism there's an equal racism. You can't fabricate one side of a coin and not the other.
With this in mind. I do know successful blacks. They are my friends. Very intelligent and well educated people. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Thu, August 11, 2005 - 9:21 AMI will jump in here for a minute- the current administration has done alot to get of affirmative action and the consequences can and probaly will be disasterous for people of color. I would not be surpirsed if people of color are being passed up or not even promoted to teh ranks that some have worked very ahrd at attaining. I see this in my own company. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Thu, August 11, 2005 - 9:28 AMAffirmative Action is holding blacks back now. It says that some people need a crutch to get a job. That they can't do it on their own.
Blacks can do fine on their own. The whole slavery thing is over. It was revenge for black Egyptians enslaving Jews a few millenia ago. If you don't believe me, go to Venice Beach, CA. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:54 AMTell it to the woman who wasn't hired for a US job who was very qualified and instead a foreign national from Ireland was brought in on a visa for that job. You seem to have your head in the sand where racism and its deleterious effects on American society and its citizens are concerned.
It is one thing to deplore the fact that there is affirmative action from an ideological standpoint...and the same thing to ignore the reason its necessary in the first place. Namely that racist use it to discriminate against our fellow citizens every day and in every way.

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Thu, August 11, 2005 - 9:39 AMhuh? I think to have a topic like this there is a lot involved- history and proven track records, etc, etc.
does affirmative action help or hinder people of color? It's been myexperiences that it helps- but to know truly, we would need more facts to support or disprove this. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Thu, August 11, 2005 - 11:45 AMMy two cents here...
Sure, slavery may be over and there may be laws that say everybody is equal but does that mean it is always enforced?
No, not in my opinion.
Go to the Mississippi Delta, go to many parts of any large city in America. The majority of people living in what would be considered poor places or slums are people of color. In those areas, do you see the best schools with the best teachers? No, not hardly ever. Most people out of college want to go teach at a *nice* school. So, if there is not equal education, how can you say that everybody has an equal opportunity to get into the best colleges, best jobs, best places to live, etc?
I believe there ARE people who abuse the system but that happens in every society for every reason.
There has to be a better solution but to take away affirmative action is not going to help anybody. -

Thu, August 11, 2005 - 11:19 PMAll I have to say is: HUH????
what about Venice Beach, could you elaborate on that....
also, really, if you think about it, slavery just ended (in terms of history)....the shadow of slavery is still cast on all of us....this tension we all feel will be with us for a bit....let's just hope our kids will have a smaller shadow cast on them.
know what I mean? -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 9:37 AMMy "HUH" was directed towards the Venice Beach comment...I don't get it...
I brought up slavery as a recent event in our history, which I believe it is. Slavery in our country was just several generations ago. This means to me that the resentment, anger, and racial tension that people feel will take time to dissipate.
IMO, Affirmative Action can both help and hurt. A 'boost' can turn into a 'crutch' very quickly if we let it.
going back to the topic subject: Hiring Black Americans.
Show me someone who has the skill or the potential and the desire to work and I'll show them an opportunity, regardless of race. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 7:59 AMI know this one is going to get me in hot water with those who don't actually read every word of a post, but I have to give my two cents worth anyway.
My outward skin color is white. When I was in retail management, the majority of my employees were outwardly black colored. Why? Because in Germany, the vast majority of the military is of outward black or brown color. It was such a pain in the ass getting the right number of "ethnic" Barbies in my toystore. I kept telling the stupid manufacturers that I had three black women to every one white woman, so why in the hell would I need 4 times as many white Barbies?!?!? Anyway, let me get back to what I was saying.
I had to make damn sure that I had every incident of misbehaviour by a black employee on video. Why? Because every time I wrote up a black employee for misbehaviour on the job, they would come back with me being racist. I couldn't figure it out. I got so pissed off once that I actually asked an employee if her taking a 45 minute cigarette break in the middle of lunch rush would not be considered WRONG if I was black myself. She couldn't answer that. Finally, after having written up one teen black employee numerous times, I caught her on security video in the back of the toy store area with children running around, dry fucking her boyfriend! They were fully clothed, but they were basically grinding their junk all up and down each other and kissing passionately. Mind you, she was on my time, not hers, and in my uniform! So I fired her on the spot. I told her to remove the uniform put on her clothes and get out. HEr parents came back an hour later screaming profanities at me and I simply called my boss. She is also outwardly white. We all went into the office, me with a video tape in hand, and they proceeded to call us all racists bitches. To which my manager pulled out the picture of her BLACK daughter, and her BLACK husband. Well, they got so flustered that they then started yelling that I was the racist at least, that I always give my black employees a hard time. (I had three german employees, and one white male employee, so most of my employees were black) At this point, I produced the video showing their 17 year old daughter in full freak, and the father apologized to me and they got up and left. No other words were exchanged.
I give you this example of my experiences in the business world because wherever I have worked, I was the minority. I am am outwardly white, I am not white, but they don't know that. They see white skin and automatically, everything out of my mouth will be racist. That to me is a pretty fucking racist way to think. I have been the minority to hispanic businesses, Hindu businesses, and black businesses. Only now am I in the majority, because I am in a field that has very few if any black men, let alone any women of any color. I have yet to be accused of racism for any thing I say, but damned if I don't see it in mnay of those in this field. When Ray Charles passed away, I nearly punched a fellow intern. The words out of his mouth made my blood curdle. I have an uphill battle in front of me, because I no longer have to be the one accused of being a racist by racist blacks, now I have to listen to racial slurs from racist whites.
It's hard to be the odd woman out. It's hard to be the ONE person in a group that sees people and not what their amount of skin pigmentation is. When I tell people I am not white, the don't believe me, simply because my skin pigment is white. Racism is alive and well in this country, but you dare stand there and believe that it's whites against blacks. It's also blacks against whites, blacks against jews, hispanics against whites, whites against hispanics, blacks and hispanics get along only in some places, but they still are against each other in most. People in this world simply suck. Racism is not a problem endemic to America. Intolerance and hatred is endemic to humanity.
Racism will never end as long as people are taught to be outrageously proud of their racial heritage. As long as we espouse the virtues of race, then racism will exist. Instead of teaching our children how this great BLACK American invented something, or this great CHINESE American invented someone, let's lose the references to racial background and just show the damn picture. Stop mentioning the importance of racial background and just start harping on the fact that he/she/it was a great HUMAN BEING, a worthy human being. I am not saying that we need to stop teaching about the history of slavery in the world, to include the brief time that black slaves and white indentured slaves were in America, (and let's not forget the current foreign national slaves working the American underground), but let's stop shoving race down our children's throats and let them see PEOPLE, and not COLOR. Children learn from us, and if we harp on skin color all the time, they will too. -

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 11:59 AMYeah, it sucks. I can remember when I did not perceive a difference in race between me and other people. And, you know what, its because folks cling to the idea of race that there is racism, sure. However, that does not make the outcome of discrimination instantly acceptable.
I feel for you. I've seen people go off the hinge because they put themselves into some imagined minority and then play off their own fears and those of others. Yeah, it sucks. Especially when they try to work other folks insecurities to their advantage. But, we have to put up with it--the only thing we can do is try to be as fair as possible. And when I mean fair, I mean not prejudge anyone based on their outward appearances as best we can.
One you actually get to know a person honestly and in the raw, its a whole 'nother matter. As your experiences relate.

Re: Hiring Black Americans
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 1:11 PMYeah, playing the race card is a stingy thing to do. I know I was offered it a few times, figuratively speaking.
Thank god I didn't pick it up. Many people, including some whites play the race card too. It's counter effective.
